Vintage Air Rally

Opening ceremony in February 2018 in London. Departure in March, total duration 6 weeks.

Countdown to the next rally

Three biplanes and 2 support planes of the VintageAirRally will touch down in Toronto Billy Bishop Airport on Wednesday 13th July 2016.
One of them is the Canadian Team with their Waco plane.
Starting in Crete, Greece on the 12th of November 2016 and finishing in Cape Town, South-Africa, on the 17th of December,
15 vintage aircraft
built in the early 1900s take to the air for a truly unique flying rally across Africa,
attempting a crossing of
10 African countries in 37 stops and 35 days.

Following in the footsteps of the pioneering flights of the 1920s and 30 years after the epic movie “Out of Africa”,
the route recreates almost exactly the 1931 Imperial Airways “Africa Route”.

GENERAL

Sam Rutherford, Organiser of the VintageAirRally and CEO of Prepare2Go, currently flies one of the support planes for the Rally back from Florida.
The Piper Saratoga with the N3999 registration just received a new paint scheme and is about to cross the Atlantic via
Greenland and Iceland for Europe ahead of the London Launch Party on the 11th of October.
In order to meet the Canadian Teams and some of the Rally Sponsors & enthusiasts,
he introduced an intermediate stop in Toronto, which is to happen on the 13th July.

I’m very happy to finally meet some of the Teams in person” says Sam,
After months of preparations and contact through email and Skype, nothing compares to a real face to face”.

Via a live-tracker, the rest of the trans-Atlantic journey can be followed in real time: http://yb.tl/prepare2go.

THE CANADIAN TEAM AND SUPPORT PLANE

The Teams competing against each other in this endurance rally to the Cape come from six different continents.
Two of them are Canadian: Pedro in his 1928 Travel Air and
a double “Peter” Team - Bowers
and Overing – with their C-FUNW registered Waco plane.
For more information on the Teams and Crews, see www.VintageAirRally.com/crews.

AFFIXING RALLY STICKERS AT THE BILLY BISHOP TORONTO CITY AIRPORT

For the first time, the Canadian Teams will now meet Sam Rutherford in the flesh
and witness the affixing of
the Rally stickers at 5PM at Porter FBO on the Airport named after Air Marshal Billy Bishop,
a Canadian World War I flying ace who flew his Nieuport 17 fighter biplane near Arras, France in 1917.

STICKER YOU: OUR NEWEST PARTNER

Today, the VintageAirRally is happy to announce they are stepping into a partnership with the fun Toronto-based StickerYou Inc. company,
founded in 2008 by Andrew Witkin and providing the Rally-decals for the biplanes and support aircraft.
The idea of working with Vintage Air Rally was so appealing to us. We’ve decaled cars, personalized office and retail spaces before,
but applying decals to a vintage airplane that will fly over the African dessert now that’s a challenge we wanted to take on
!” Andrew says.

RANDOLPH ENGINEERING

Randolph Engineering is also meeting with the VintageAirRally Team and fitting its aviator glasses on Pedro, a member of one of the Canadian Teams.
Born from an American Dream rich in military heritage, Randolph promises to engineer, responsibly manufacture and market the highest quality eyewear. VintageAirRally is proud its Teams will be wearing their aviator glasses and have them as a partner.

THE ORGANISATION

The VintageAirRally is a Prepare2go endeavour, which has extensive experience in ground and air logistics in difficult countries. As part of its aviation activities it has already successfully flown this route 8 times in the last 8 years with groups of light aircraft (including vintage and helicopter).  The Organisers behind the Rally are Sam Rutherford and his team.

Stampe Fly-In

On the evening of 5 September, the two vintage bi-planes will fly a formation flight at sunset outside of the factory in which they were built. Now a museum, the planes return to fly over where they were constructed in Antwerp by Stampe-Vertongen in the 1920’s before undertaking the most ambitious journey they have ever made.

About

Following in the footsteps of the pioneering flights of the 1920s, 15 vintage aircraft built in the early 1900s take to the air for a truly unique rally across the Americas. The VintageAirRally starts on the 3rd March 2018 from Ushuaia, Argentina and finishes on the 14th April in Florida, USA. The Rally connects some of the most beautiful and evocative points, combining the challenge of flying these magnificent planes with the element of competition which was equally prevalent in those early days. The Rally begins from the world’s southernmost airport, heading north to Florida, journey’s end. A rally such as this has never been done before in South America – and follows on from the successful 2016 VintageAirRally Crete2Cape.
