CRETE2CAPE VINTAGE AIR RALLY ACROSS AFRICA

PRESS RELEASE 2 Sep 2016

When: Monday 5 Sep 2016, 19:00

Where: Stampe-Vertongen Museum, Antwerp International Airport, Luchthavenlei 1, Box 3, 2100 Antwerpen

In a historic moment for Belgian aviation, two teams from Wallonia and Flanders are participating in the world’s first vintage bi-plane rally across the African continent in November 2016.

On the evening of 5 September, the two vintage bi-planes will fly a formation flight at sunset outside the factory in which they were built. Now a museum, the planes return to fly over where they were constructed in Antwerp by Stampe-Vertongen in the 1920’s before undertaking the most ambitious journey they have ever made.

The sunset flight will be attended by the VintageAirRally team, a Stampe- Vertongen aviation engineer, and the flying teams themselves.

Team 1 ‘Kiwi and Frog’ is pilot couple Cedric and Alexandra Maingard who run the Brussels Aviation School at the Charleroi Airport.

Team 2 is Frank De Meyer and his co-participant. Frank is an acrobatic pilot who manages the company ‘Feel the Sky’. He takes clients up in the air for acrobatics.

Engineer Raymond Cuypers in attendance at the event is one of the few engineers in Belgium with the ability to service the antique Stampe-Vertongen planes.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Beginning in Crete, Greece on the 12th of November 2016 and finishing at the Cape, South-Africa on the 17th of December, 10 vintage aircraft built in the early 1900s take to the air for a truly unique flying rally across Africa. For the first time in history, ten two-person international teams will attempt to fly vintage planes over 10 African countries with 37 stops in 35 days.

Following the footsteps of the pioneering flights of the 1920s and 30 years after the epic movie “Out of Africa”, the route recreates almost exactly the 1931 Imperial Airways “Africa Route”.

Via a live-tracker, the rest of the trans-Atlantic journey can be followed in real time: http://yb.tl/prepare2go.

THE ORGANISATION

Prepare2go is a company based out of Belgium and the UK, specialising in extraordinary logistics, or simply put, moving people and equipment in, out and through difficult places and countries.
The VintageAirRally is a Prepare2go endeavour, which has extensive experience in ground and air logistics in difficult countries. As part of its aviation activities it has already successfully flown this route 8 times in the last 8 years with groups of light aircraft (including vintage and helicopter). The organisers behind the Rally are Sam Rutherford and his team.

THE CHARITIES

The VintageAirRally supports three charities, each representing different “branches” of our Living Planet: one is as an ambassador for Unicef (the “human branch”). The other is in aid of Birdslife International, supporting their Vulture program. They are are quintessential to human health (the “animal branch”) and the last is our “seedbombing” project (the “plant branch”).
“Yes, we will be throwing bombs out of our cockpits; only, will they be made out of seeds, earth and fertilizer...” says Sam Rutherford.

About

Following in the footsteps of the pioneering flights of the 1920s, 15 vintage aircraft built in the early 1900s take to the air for a truly unique rally across the Americas. The VintageAirRally starts on the 3rd March 2018 from Ushuaia, Argentina and finishes on the 14th April in Florida, USA. The Rally connects some of the most beautiful and evocative points, combining the challenge of flying these magnificent planes with the element of competition which was equally prevalent in those early days. The Rally begins from the world’s southernmost airport, heading north to Florida, journey’s end. A rally such as this has never been done before in South America – and follows on from the successful 2016 VintageAirRally Crete2Cape.
